Konnichiwapp is a hobby project built and maintained by Florin. This policy covers both the konnichiwapp.com website and the Konnichiwapp Reader browser extension. It explains what data each of them handles and why.
Lesson, kanji and vocabulary content shown on konnichiwapp.com is fetched from our content management system (Sanity) to render pages. This content is not personal data and is the same for every visitor.
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the site (pages viewed, approximate location from IP, device/browser type). Google Analytics uses cookies and may collect your IP address. This data is used only in aggregate to improve the site and is not used to identify you individually. You can control this via your browser's cookie/tracking settings.
Interactive features such as the Hiragana game and kanji games save your progress (for example known words or current level) in your browser's local storage. This data stays on your device and is not sent to our servers.
The website does not currently require you to create an account or provide personal information to use it. We do not collect health, financial, or authentication data, and we do not sell your data.
Konnichiwapp Reader has a single purpose: help users read Japanese text on any webpage by adding furigana/romaji above kanji, showing word definitions on hover, and optionally reading the selected text aloud.
The extension uses the "storage" permission to save your preferences (for example: furigana on/off, text size, overlay settings) locally in your browser via chrome.storage. This data never leaves your device and is not sent to us or to any third party.
The extension requests host access to https://jisho.org to look up the reading and definition of a word when you hover over it or select it. Only the specific word you look up is sent to Jisho over HTTPS; no browsing history or full page content is transmitted. Results are cached locally to avoid repeated requests.
The extension reads the visible text of the page you are viewing locally, in your browser, to detect Japanese text, add furigana and enable the listening player. This processing happens on your device only and is not transmitted to our servers.
We do not collect personally identifiable information, health information, financial information, authentication credentials, personal communications, location data, web browsing history, or keystroke/mouse activity. The extension itself does not use analytics or advertising trackers.
Konnichiwapp Reader does not load or execute remote code. All JavaScript logic ships inside the extension package and is reviewed as part of the Chrome Web Store submission.
We do not sell or transfer user data to third parties, except as needed to provide the dictionary lookup feature and standard analytics described above. We do not use or transfer data for purposes unrelated to those described in this policy, and we never use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published on this page with a new effective date below.
