Days of the Week & Important Dates

Learning the days of the week and how to talk about important dates is essential for daily conversation in Japanese. This lesson covers the basic vocabulary and expressions you need. We'll build upon the "Time to Learn: Hours & Minutes" lesson and prepare you for discussing family events in the next lesson, "My Family & Friends".

Days of the Week (曜日・ようび)

The days of the week in Japanese all end with 曜日 (ようび - youbi), which literally means "day of the week." The kanji used for each day corresponds to elements of nature or celestial bodies, making them easy to remember.

English Japanese Hiragana Romaji Kanji Origin
Sunday 日曜日 にちようび nichiyoubi Sun
Monday 月曜日 げつようび getsuyoubi Moon
Tuesday 火曜日 かようび kayoubi Fire
Wednesday 水曜日 すいようび suiyoubi Water
Thursday 木曜日 もくようび mokuyoubi Wood/Tree
Friday 金曜日 きんようび kin'youbi Gold/Metal

  • 今日(きょう)は何日(なんにち)ですか? and then ask 何曜日(なんようび)ですか? Kyou wa nannichi desu ka? and then ask Nanyoubi desu ka? (What day of the month is it? and then ask what day of the week it is?)

Talking About Dates

Months (月・がつ)

The months in Japanese are straightforward: simply add 月 (がつ - gatsu, meaning "month") to the number of the month. For example, 一月 (いちがつ - ichigatsu) is January (first month).

Days of the Month (日・にち)

While most days of the month follow a simple pattern (number + 日 (にち - nichi)), the first ten days and the 20th have unique readings. It's important to memorize these!

For the days between 11th and 19th, and 21st-31st (excluding 20th), you simply combine the tens place (じゅう - juu for ten, にじゅう - nijuu for twenty, さんじゅう - sanjuu for thirty) with the appropriate number + にち. Note the changes in pronunciation for 14th (じゅうよっか - juuyokka) and 24th (にじゅうよっか - nijuuyokka) similar to the 4th (よっか - yokka).

Putting it all together: Year, Month, and Day

When writing or saying the date in Japanese, the order is Year, Month, Day. For example, July 4th, 2024 would be:
